Default Color in Web Design

The color scheme you choose for your website design is critical. Color affects our perception of space, so when planning your site carefully choose your colors. If you have hired a web designer, he or she can help determine the best color scheme for your website.

Much research has been conducted around the psychology of color. A recent study published in the journal Nature, analyzed the effect of color uniforms for athletes, as footballers, boxers and wrestlers. The study concluded that athletes wearing red won more than sixty percent of the time. The scientists who conducted the study were convinced that the red uniform gave the winning team a psychological edge. You might want to consider red clothes for your header background.

The colors are often associated with temperature or certain emotions. These derivatives are culturally meanings, and they can have a real effect on people. The colors such as red, orange and yellow are considered "warm" colors and can have a stimulating effect. The New York Times recently published an article concerning the color schemes for schools, and found that the reds, yellows and oranges were often used in the corridors to "accelerate the children in the halls and gymnasiums."

Blues and greens are considered "cool" colors and can have a calming effect, especially when combined with fluorescent lighting. Blues and grays are also associated with ice, snow or winter. If your company has sold skis, for example, you may want to consider using these colors.

Gray and beige, the colors are neutral and associations as well. Silver grey or may take on a futuristic, "gee-whiz" connotation. Beiges and brown can be used to suggest a nostalgic, retro feel in a cabin. White can be used to create a broader feel in a space while creating a black greatest.

Factor your company's home base or the location of your target audience when considering the color palette. If your company is based in the Southwest, browns and tans could work for you. Or, if your customer base you are targeting is located near the coast, such as Miami, consider blues or greens. You should consider the choice of colours to be one of the items on your "arsenal" that you compete for the attention of the customer and maintaining your website.
