how does one do a blog skin (html)?

I've been blogging for over three years already, but when it comes to creating blog skins "I've only just begun"... I'm very much willing to learn but I can't seem to find enough info in books. I know the basics of html but I don't know how to put a background image or to write a code so that the graphics are arranged the way I want. Also, I don't know how to write the code for the space for text (it looks like a frame, but different). Please help me!!!

I'm familiar with the code, but could somebody please explain to me how it turned out that way? Also, I can't seem to find the code for the text-space (where all the posts are displayed).
