Default Litter Robot - The Good, The Bad And The Smelly Aspects Of The Litter Robot

A month ago I bought a Litter Robot to help avoid having to clean the litter boxes one of my least favorite things to do. After using it for 4 weeks, does the space-age self-cleaning litter box live up to its price tag? Read on to find out.
The first thing I noticed about the Litter Robot was the massive size of the box it came in. It looked like someone had delivered a refrigerator to my house! Once I put the unit together a very easy process - it was still a little large, but still took up less space than the two litter boxes I had been using for my two cats. The Litter Robot is a large globe that sits on top of a rectangular waste bin. It was a little bit difficult to pour the litter into the globe through the opening. I invested in a plastic scoop so that I could just scoop the litter in instead of having to try and pour it and get litter all over the floor.
According to the instructions, you are not supposed to force your cats to use the Litter Robot. But I am not a patient person, so I took away the old litter boxes and hoped for the best. The cats were a little bit cautious at first, but eventually got up the courage to go into the globe. The Litter Robot has an automatic timer that starts the cleaning cycle 7 minutes after the cat has gone to the bathroom. It is really cool to watch the cleaning cycle at first and my husband and I were amazed by how the thing worked.
The waste dumps into a bin below the globe which you are supposed to empty 1-2 times a week, depending on the number of cats you have. We are both bad about cleaning the cat boxes (which is why we needed the Litter Robot in the first place.) For our two cats we waited a week to empty the waste bin. The weird thing is that there was mold growing on some of the clumps of litter. This might be caused by wet litter being stuck in a drawer for a week. Still, it was easy to throw out the bag and put in a new garbage bag.
The one last thing I bought was a mat to put in front of the globe entrance. My cats tended to jump out of the globe after going to the bathroom and would spray little bits of kitty litter all over the floor. The mat catches the litter and I just vacuum it once a week. I do notice some bad smells coming from the Litter Robot at times, but the old litter boxes were just as smelly.
